DNA Swab Test Overview

A DNA Swab Test is a procedure to determine the identification of an individual by way of a specific DNA profile. It could be thought of as genetic fingerprinting and is routinely used to determine identity and parentage as well as in criminal investigations. The process was first used in 1984 and has been available commercially since 1987. To obtain an accurate test, the specific steps of the profiling process must be performed correctly and in the right order. Probably the most important aspect of a DNA swab test, is to start the process with a sterile swab to avoid contamination and/or adulteration of the test results.

A DNA swab test operates on the premise that a child inherits unique DNA strands from it’s biological parents. Everyone has unique DNA strands, however a child will inherit some from the mother and some from the father. Parentage can be determined by achieving a match of the child’s DNA with that of the parents and/or other family members. In instances where families have been separated, the ability to match DNA by way of a DNA swab test, can lead to a reuniting of lost family members..

One of the most common situations where a DNA swab testis routinely used, is to determine parentage when there is doubt within the family. It is possible to have a test kit delivered and carry out the test at home, then return the samples to the testing center. It is an affordable process and can provide answers to those concerned with fidelity, ancestry and paternity. However, if the results are to be used as evidence in a court case, the testing must be undertaken in a third party testing center by professional technicians, with an established chain of custody process in place. So while it is entirely possible to do a DNA swab test at home, if the results are required in a court o law, it is always best to use the services o a testing center.

In the same way, it is possible to use a DNA swab test to resolve other family disputes by establishing the blood relationship of an individual, in a case of a disputed inheritance. While perhaps a little more difficult, it is also possible to establish family connections between family members which are further removed than the parent child relationship, such as blood cousins for example. It is also possible to reunite families who have been separated by a variety of circumstances, such as war, economic calamity and other reasons. So long as the swabs are kept sterile, the results of the DNA test swab will be reliable.

DNA test swab procedures and technologies are still evolving and are increasingly used to solve crimes. As procedural technology continues to improve, results for unsolved crimes in the past will be increasingly more reliable and mysteries will be solved. It is increasingly recognized that a DNA swab test  is becoming commonplace to determine genetic relationships and it is possible that it’s uses may spread across a broader spectrum in the future.
