Your Questions About Dna Swab

Steven asks…
Do I have rights to avoid getting a dna swab?
I recently heard of police taking DNA swabs from innocent people and the possibility of corrupt police falsely incriminating you.
admin answers:
Before the police can take a DNA swab they have to have ‘probable cause’ linking you to a specific crime.
BTW – you should apply at least some level of scepticism to claims of ‘possibly corrupt police.’ Whenever you see this claim – look into it further to see if that claim has any real basis.

Mandy asks…
How long does a DNA swab last for?
After you have taken a swab of DNA ow long will it last for?
Thanks
admin answers:
Stored in the freezer, about 2 weeks. Stored in a water solution then froze, about 8 weeks.

Carol asks…
Will a DNA Swab still be valid if you cut the inside of your cheek whilst doing the scrape?
Hi
I did a DNA Swab this morning and started with my right inside cheek and it said to roll the brush thing around ‘vigorously’ for 15 seconds and I did this and it cut this inside of my cheek so there was a bit of blood on the swab brush. I then did the left cheek softer so this one was fine, do you think the fact that I got blood on one will make the results any less valid?
Many thanks
admin answers:
No. It turns out that your whole body has the exact same set of DNA molecules (some exceptions include stomach bacteria or reproductive cells). That means the cells that form blood are the same that form your eye. The only difference is which part of the DNA is activated.
In short, don’t worry about it.

Mary asks…
What would a Parole Officer want DNA swab for?
A friend has been instructed to come to his PO’s office for a DNA mouth swab. No reason given. No reason that anyone we know can come up with.
It seems like he should be given a reason or presented with a search warrant for this. He isn’t a sexual offender and no one is claiming that he is the father of their kid. This makes no sense to us.
Does anyone have any ideas?
admin answers:
You didn’t say what state you’re asking about, so it’s a little hard to address this accurately.
In California, DNA has been collected from certain persons since 2004 (or earlier, I think). That program will expand to include a whole lot more people in 2008.
Why doesn’t your friend just ask his parole agent to explain why the DNA is being collected? Not like he’s going to be slapped just for asking, you know?

William asks…
Can breast milk interfere with a DNA swab?
Just curious if the breast milk left in a babys mouth be picked up by the lab.
admin answers:
I suppose theoretically it could interfere with an oral swab because breast milk certainly contains cells from the mother, such as epithelial cells that slough off from the glands as the milk is expressed. A blood draw would get you around that particular problem.
