Your Questions About Dna Testing For Ethnicity

Daniel asks…
is ethnicity dna testing legit?
I have deep hungarian and austrian roots. i remember my great-grandmother referring to her people as “gypsies”. I always grew up thinking that it was sort of a low class status to be a gypsy until I recently read something truly interesting, which is that many experts believe the gypsies or Romas were originally from Egypt and sent into exile for harboring the Messiah, Baby Jesus! As a devout Christian I got goosebumps when I read this. Though I know for sure I am a mut made up by Sicilian, Hungarian and even a little Scandanavian I have been asked all of my life if I was Egyptian, Syrian, Jordanian etc. Quite frankly, my dad and his dad do look Arabic. I’d love to find out more and I have only heard one other person that did the DNA testing. According to her she found out she had African in her (she was a Latino woman). She had no idea. Is this stuff the real deal or just a big hoax???

There are some websites that you can go to for DNA testing. I would make sure they are legit before you order a testing kit though. I believe it costs upwards of $100 to do it. But it can be really interesting to find out! Another thing that you should take into account is that the tests results don’t specify ethnicity of your ancestors so it can be a little vague. I believe the 4 categories are Caucasian, Sub-Saharan African, East Asian, & Native American. So like if you got a result of 50% Caucasian that could mean Norwegian or it could mean Iranian, if it comes out at 50% East Asian it could mean Japanese or Indonesian etc. So I don’t think they get extremely in depth but don’t quote me on that. I have heard that there are some sites that claim to be able to tell you what tribe in africa you most likely come from so I could be wrong about how deep they can go.
You should listen to the youtube links I have listed in my sources. It’s from a program on NPR. That’s where I first heard about this topic. It’s really interesting & informative.
Hope this helped!

Joseph asks…
DNA testing for world ethnicity information?
Does anyone know the best place to go, to get a dna test to determine your ‘ethnic’ make up, like they did in the channel 4 programme 100% English. There are various sites I have found but dont really understand what I am looking for. I dont want results which come through as a big long list of numbers and ‘markers’, I would like an analysis of the dna to say,, you’re this percentage african or this percentage european etc etc and would like it broken down as much as possible.
Has anyone had this done and did they understand the results ok?
Does anyone know whether the tests are accurate or not.
I am located in London if that makes any difference to whats available.
thanks

You are so right. Most of these testing companies give you a hodge podge of complicated numbers and double talk explanations.
I think you saw the AncestryByDNA company in the UK.
It provides you with a simple and objective description of your ancestral origins. The ethnicity test gives you an estimated percentage of ancestry from the four major historical population groups (races).

Nancy asks…
Is there a dna test for ethnicity?
I just wanted to know if there was a blood test to see what all ethnicities you are
admin answers:
Yes, there are DNA tests that help you discover where in the world your ancestors came from, and to the best of my knowledge some go further than merely European, sub-Saharan African, East Asian, etc. Some are specific enough that they could tell if you have ancestry from, say Northern/Southern Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, West Africa, etc. They may not necessarily pinpoint the exact nation or nations but they’ll be in the right ballpark anyway.

Thomas asks…
The cost of ethnicity(DNA) test? +what can be determined from it for a female about her fathers lineage?
My family on my mothers side I have mostly Scottish blood from Prince edward Island but I would be considered arcadian with Micmac (native american) , french, and english- mixed with my fathers blood (which is very mixed from what I have gathered-with several native americans somewhere in there besides that I know nothing)
I am not sure how much you could tell from testing, would they be able to identify the native american tribe/type or any other markers with in so may generations and such a large mix? Does have so many clashing ethnicitys make testing useless?
I am not sure if its worth testing or what, I would like to know if I have enough scottish or native american or any particular blood-lineage to pay for collage and the bottom line I am curious as to what I am…
admin answers:
If you take a DNA test it won’t tell you anything about your fathers lineage because the markers are passed father to son, not father to daughter.
Here is a webpage that has alot of information about DNA testing, including some pricing, I did quite a bit of research…

DNA ethnicity/autosomal testing question?
If I take after my mother more than my father in physical appearance (more than my brother or sister), will my autosomal test results tell me more about my mother’s DNA than my father’s (and vice-versa). Thanks for any useful answers.
I am not asking about YDNA or mtDNA testing, that is a different subject. I have done my mtDNA test and I do not have male DNA or a male proxy to do the YDNA test.
Thanks Virion! I think it is too early for me of course you are right I am being stupid, I need some more coffee.
admin answers:
You have received exactly the same number of autosomal chromosomes and autosomal genetic information from your father and your mother. Your physical appearance does not matter. DNA analysis of your autosomal chromosomes will contain as much information about your mother’s as your father’s DNA. The only problem is that it is not possible to say which information came from your father and which from your mother, without also testing them.
(This is why testing of mitochondrial DNA and Y-chromosome DNA is more popular because you always receive all your mitochondrial DNA from your mother and all your Y-chromosome DNA (if you are a boy) from your father, but you specifically asked about autosomal DNA.)
