Robert Your Questions About Dna Testing Hair

Robert asks…

Can people be identified by their hair, without any use of DNA Testing?

I’m doing a Science Project. The question is, Can people be identified by their hair? I realized I can’t use DNA Testing, so is there anyway to identify people without DNA Testing?

admin answers:

I’ll list out the stuff u can find with hair
1.Human or animal or fibres like nylon
2.Texture, color like curly, straight, blonde or brunette
3.Race- caucasian,mongoloid,negroid
4.Any artificial stuff like coloring, straightening etc,
5.Some drugs show up too and poisons like arsenic
In the end, all u can say is tat this hair belongs to a caucasian, with curly blonde hair, colored brunette using ….hair color if u can ID it by chromatography, using some drugs or was poisoned by something..
This is the most u can do with hair i think!!
Yeah,BTW, u can tell wat they cut their hair with.like a scissors,or was it pulled from the roots.was it singed and stuff

George Your Questions About Dna Testing Hair

George asks…

how can DNA testing on a strand of hair be able to determine race?

i am half south american half white australian.

i understand results could include gender, age, drug use etc but how does it determine race?

admin answers:

The DNA sequence in the human race is 99.9% similar across the entire species. Genetic diversity of humans is limited to 0.1% . This variation is due to mutations, deletions, insertions or inversions of the sequence. Of this 0.1%, 1% can be see to be inherited due to common racial ancestry. This 0.001% difference is used to determine race from a DNA sequence. These differences occur due to a process called Genetic Drift. As humans spread across the earth populations became sexually isolated. Molecular markers or differences evolve at unique frequencies based on population size and allele frequency in the original isolated population. A single marker can not be used to determine race of a specific DNA strand, rather multiple markers are use, over 150 in some cases, to determine racial identity.

Laura asks…

hair testing/ dna for steriods?

I think i was given steriods for a certain amount of time unknowingly from my former occupation i dont want to say where, but I cut my hair and i saved it i was going to give it to locks of love and I was wondering if i got this hair tested would it show up?
if the hair wont show..how long would it show up in my body?

admin answers:

I don’t believe so, to be able to pick up stuff like that you would need a living cell and the cells at the end of your hair a dead, so there would be no way to do a good test to figure it out. This is wha tI believe. For my biolofy class we went to the science center and had out DNA looked at, but we had to use the top end of the hair with the oil at the end because the end with the oil is where there are still some living cells and they told us that they can’t see DNA with dead cells, they need living cells

Michael Your Questions About Dna Testing Hair

Michael asks…

how long does alcohol stay in your hair for dna testing?

admin answers:

What…? Alcohol doesn’t get incorporated into hair. And I don’t understand how alcohol relates to DNA testing unless you are talking about the actual in-lab procedure that the scientist performs on the sample to be analyzed.
